Toy Dolls

Toy Dolls is known to be formed in Sunderland, England, in October of 1979 and comprised such musicians as singer Pete Zulu (born Peter Robson), guitarist Olga (Michael Algar), bassist Flip (Philip Dugdale), and drummer Mr. Colin Scott. The band became extremely popular pretty soon after they appeared in the world of show business.

Toy Dolls was considered to be one of the most prosperous contemporary bands, and the band existed for a long time. Toy Dolls specialized in heavy earsplitting sounds being a punk outfit. However the stuff of the band was not permanent: pretty soon after forming the band one of the members of it, namely Pete Zulu disbanded but was not replaced.

After Toy Dolls became a trio their success remained on the same level. The band debuted with their single called "Tommy Kowey's Car" which was issued in 1980. The single enjoyed popularity. The band itself was appreciated both by the press and musical critics. Moreover they became famous both home and abroad and had a lot of fans.

Toy Dolls is also popular for such releases as "She's a Worky Ticket" and "Deirdre's a Slag" (a potshot at Coronation Street star Deirdre Barlow), an eponymous EP (was issued in September of 1981), "Everybody Jitterbug" (single, was introduced on EMI, issued in 1982), Dig That Groove Baby (their first full-length album).

Toy Dolls also issued "Nellie the Elephant" (remake of the previously released single which was rather successful especially in their home country, was issued in 1984, the recording also featured bassist Bonny Baz (Barry Warne) and drummer Dicky (Malcolm Dick), the single became a chart-topper in pop charts of England.

Toy Dolls also issued A Far Out Disc (LP, issued in 1985), Idle Gossip (1986). In 1989 the band celebrated their birthday- 10 years together. And when the band had their 20th anniversary Cleopatra Records made a wonderful present for it: the release of the best-of collection The Wonderful World of the Toy Dolls was introduced to the world.

Toy Dolls made a lot of concerts both home and abroad. But still the band was more successful in the United Kingdom rather than in other countries. Every now and than the band made tours: for instance, a tour in support of the Angelic Upstarts. The fact that the stuff was constantly changing didn’t prevent the band from success (Olga was the only permanent member).
