Smokie

The famos British pop group called Smokie appeared in Yorkshire in the middle 70’s. The band’s lineup consisted of such musicians as Chris Norman (singer), Terry Utley (guitar), Alan Silson (bass), and Pete Spencer (drums).

Before founding Smokie Terry Utley, Chris Norman, and Alan Silson played in the Elizabethans band. But in 1968 they started their own project: the Kindness group and recruited Pete Spencer. Their records hadn’t success, and in 1975 they signed the professional with Rak Records under the name Smokey.

Smokey’s debut single entitled "If You Think You Know How to Love Me" was recorded and released in 1975 and had a huge success in the United Kingdom. The record became one of the most popular British songs of that year.

In 1976 the Smokey’s bandmembers issued their next hit single called "Don't Play Your Rock 'N Roll to Me." The same year they decided to change the group title and began to sign under the name Smokie. Also in 1976 they produced another Top Ten hit: "Living Next Door to Alice."

At the end of the 70’s Smokie continued its success with such hit singles like "It's Your Life" (1977) and "Oh Carol" (1978). But in the early 80’s the group’s records failed to charts. The band split in 1982 after releasing its final full-length album entitled Midnight Delight.

After the Smokie band disbanding Chris Norman and Pete Spencer worked on Rak Records during the 80’s. At the end of the 80’s Smokie was reformed and released such full-length albums like: My Heart Is True (1988), All Fired Up (1989), and Greatest Hits Live (1989).
